The Kerry Writers Museum
Ignite your imagination and discover a dreamworld, a whole world of magic told by the Seanachai – the bearer of Irish folklore. Embark on a journey set against the canvas of some of the greatest wordsmiths the country has ever seen.
No other part of Ireland has ever produced as many world-class writers and storytellers. At the Kerry Writers Museum, we celebrate their work and invite you to gaze through the windows of wonder to discover a wider and greater world.
Follow the hare and find the elephant in the classroom. Let the Seanachai hypnotise you and don’t let the shy singer distract you.
Be immersed in the universes of John B. Keane (The Field), Bryan MacMahon, Brendan Kennelly, Maurice Walsh (The Quiet Man) and George Fitzmaurice in a dizzying swirl of words.
Get to know them intimately and learn how the local landscape, folklore, and colourful characters of North Kerry brought their amazing stories to life.
Follow our museum mascot Púca the Hare and discover interactive stories specifically designed to engage our younger visitors. As you move through the writers exhibition you will discover five stories taken from the 1930’s Irish Folklore Commission Schools Collection. All stories are based in North Kerry and include: – A Ghost Story – Faction Fights – A Funny Story – A Story about a Hag – Fairy Forts All of Púca’s stories are brought to life by illustrations created by 5th class pupils of Scoil Realta na Maidine (Boy’s Primary School), Listowel. ‘Listowel through the Ages’ at Kerry Writers’ Museum (new for 2020).
